Japan–China Tensions in the Senkaku/Diaoyu Dispute and Their Impact on Regional Stability

Abstract

The topic concerning Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands represents the main topic of their interrelation. This topic causes tensions in the region and influences the security dynamics. Although there is no enmity between the two states, the discussion continues as a result of interests of nations. Thus, the current research was conducted applying the qualitative methodology as well as the approach of constructivism in order to estimate the influence of the nation’s identity, the collective memory, and symbolic actions upon threat and state behaviors. According to the findings of the study, it should be stated that the reason for the peaceful situation in the region is not in its nonexistence, but rather in the management of conflicts through the use of strategic communications, self-control, and risk management. Disputes represent a form of competition in the region and this way create conditions for a peaceful situation in the region.
