The Issue of the Rohingya Ethnic Minority Group in the Dynamics of Bilateral and Regional Relations in South Asia

Abstract

The problem of Rohingya ethnic minority is a humanitarian problem that affects bilateral and regional relations of South Asia. The Rohingya have faced discrimination and violence in Myanmar that has led to transnational movement of refugees especially to Bangladesh, which is the chief destination. This issue is no longer a domestic issue but it has become a regional issue that threatens the stability of the region and the tenets of regional cooperation. This paper will examine how the Rohingya problem has affected bilateral relations in South Asia, and how this affects regional cooperation.The research method used is a qualitative approach through a literature review of official documents, international organization reports, and academic studies. The results show that the Rohingya issue has triggered diplomatic tensions, challenged regional cooperation mechanisms, and exposed the limitations of regional institutions in addressing cross-border humanitarian crises.
